Radio Forth Cash for Kids & Mission Christmas FAQs

Radio Forth Cash for KidsRadio Forth Cash for Kids is celebrating the success of another great year after recent figures showed the charity raised over £1.7 million pounds which helped support 48,159 vulnerable children throughout 2018*.

Part of the fundraising efforts includes Mission Christmas which seeks to provide underprivileged children with presents during the festive period.

The Radio Forth festive appeal helped support over 24,000 young people in 2018 who otherwise might have woken up on Christmas day without any presents. The success of the campaign shows the amazing generosity of the Radio Forth listeners and the kind people of Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk. Their incredible support meant that £1,197,737 was donated in gifts and cash donations** for Forth’s Mission Christmas last year.

Cash for Kids is Bauer Radio’s network of local charities which operate across 22 areas in the UK all year round. Throughout 2018, Cash for Kids raised £5.8 million in Scotland from donations and fundraising efforts which helped support nearly 250,000 children. More than 90,000 children were helped through the Mission Christmas campaign alone.

The fundraising efforts resulted in a record year for the charity with £21 million raised in total throughout the UK. These vital funds allowed the Cash for Kids network to respond to the needs of more than 1 million children across the UK, over 380,000 of which were supported by the Mission Christmas campaign.

Despite its ongoing success, the campaign recently faced completely false and unsubstantiated claims around Mission Christmas which have been addressed in the frequently asked questions (FAQ) outlined below.

Who does Cash for Kids Mission Christmas support? Can anyone apply?

Cash for Kids Mission Christmas supports underprivileged children throughout the UK. We do not accept applications from individuals and those wishing to apply need to go through their supporting organisation such as a social worker, so as to ensure their situation is validated. Any organisations applying must go through an approval process to ensure they meet our criteria of supporting disadvantaged children.

All gifts or cash donated are distributed to underprivileged children in the radio stations transmission area – for example, all donations to Radio Forth are distributed across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk.

What age groups does Cash for Kids Mission Christmas support?

Cash for Kids Mission Christmas supports children from birth right up to the age of 18, providing them with gifts during Christmas.

Does Cash for Kids accept gifts and toys as well as cash?

Cash for Kids accept both cash donations and gift donations for children across a range of age groups.

We have no control over the age suitability of the gifts we are donated and can therefore be short of toys for particular age groups such as babies and teenagers, for example.

**Cash donations are therefore used to buy a gift on a donor’s behalf for any age categories we are falling short of gifts for.

We have stringent processes and take full responsibility for processing gifts so they reach disadvantaged children in local areas.

How do successful beneficiaries receive their gifts?

In order to ensure we reach our minimum 80% contribution target, which ensures cash and gifts donated go to help under-privileged children, we do not have a delivery infrastructure. This ensures there is no cost of delivering gifts and instead allows us to focus on helping disadvantaged children in our communities.

We ask organisations that apply for gifts to collect them from Mission HQ and distribute to the families they support. Organisations must go through an approval process to ensure they meet our criteria of supporting disadvantaged children and we do not take applications from individual families to ensure that their situation is validated by a third party.

When can donations be made for Mission Christmas?

Gifts can be donated up until an agreed date in December, ahead of Christmas Day. There are a variety of drop off points that Cash for Kids collects donations from and gifts can also be handed in at the Mission Christmas HQ.

What happens to donations made after the deadline?

After the deadline it is not possible for Cash for Kids to sort or distribute donated gifts as most of the organisations who submit applications for support are not working after this date. Cash for Kids therefore ask that any donations collected after the deadline are held and collected by Cash for Kids in January the following year. These gifts are then used to support families in crisis in the New Year or held in a secure location ready to be distributed for the following year’s Mission Christmas appeal.

Please note: Radio Clyde Cash for Kids in Glasgow is set up slightly differently to the other Cash for Kids and only accepts cash donations. These cash donations are distributed as grants to families in the run up to Christmas.
